Two weeks have passed since our nine crew said farewell to their loved ones in Alicante. Since then, the guys have tackled many obstacles, slept few hours, and seen some amazing sights. They’re all tough and dedicated sailors, but the truth is, everyone misses their nearest and dearest now and again.
Back in Alicante, each member of Team Vestas had his own way of saying goodbye: A kiss and tight squeeze for the kids for some; a longing embrace for wives, partners, parents and siblings for others; a quick Skype chat or phone call to those who couldn’t be there. Emotions were running high. It was time for all involved – crews, families and friends – to #jointherace.
After the initial adrenaline of leaving port and starting Leg 1, you start to think about when you’ll receive your first email from home. What will it say? Who will it be from? Will I have time to write back? We’ve already had two birthdays on land since the Race started: Last week, Nico’s son Tully turned three; this week was the turn of Cicho’s daughter Lara. It might only mean a quick email or video message, but for the next nine months, between stopovers, this is family time.
“It’s good to have news from home and I feel that they’re part of this race too”, says Cicho. “They live the race as if they were going around the world – every night they put a dot on the map of where we are!”
We thank the families and loved ones for their support, for joining us in this, a race we must win together. You too can #jointherace by following us on social media and making a pledge on http://teamvestaswind.vestas.com/jointherace
